Who We Are
Habitat for Humanity of McHenry County believes that every man, woman and child should have a decent, safe and affordable place to live.
We do not give homes away, but assist families with obtaining affordable mortgages and rehabbing/building homes together.
Habitat for Humanity of McHenry County (HFHMC) is an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing organization. We strive both to change the systems that lead to poverty housing and build communities where everyone can afford to live.
In addition, the need for decent, affordable housing is far greater than any single organization can meet, which is why HFHMC works with partners throughout the community including businesses, non-profits, government entities, civic organizations, and the faith community. We enthusiastically share Habitat for Humanity International’s ultimate goal of putting shelter on the hearts and minds of people in such a powerful way that poverty housing and homelessness become socially, politically, and religiously unacceptable in our region, nation, and world.
What We Do
We are always looking for volunteers at our construction sites and ReStores! We are currently working on homes in Crystal Lake, Wonder Lake, and Harvard. No skills necessary as our awesome leaders will guide and train along the way.
- No construction experience is necessary. In fact, many of our volunteers are brand-new to the world of home construction! Simply come ready to learn and Habitat construction staff will guide you from there.
- Volunteer day activities can include anything it takes to build a home from start to finish. Typical volunteer activities include: framing, siding, painting, roofing, laying flooring, hanging doors or windows, trim work, finishing, landscaping, and cleaning. We mean it when we say – every single task is critical for the success of our mission.
-
Volunteer arrival time is between 7:45a.m. and 8:00a.m. The workday is from 8:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Please be punctual so you don’t miss the work-day goals and instructions necessary to accomplish the day’s tasks. Please be sure to arrive with your completed waiver. Minors must have a parent/guardian signature.
- The minimum age to volunteer is 16 years old with adult supervision required for anyone under 18.
- Please wear clothing that you do not mind getting dirty or possibly damaged. Sturdy, hard-soled, closed-toed, closed-heeled shoes are required.
