AmeriCorps position overview: participates and leads individual and group recreational activities to help in the treatment and rehabilitation of residents on the Long Term Care Unit of the hospital. Will work with Activities Coordinator, the staff of long term care units, residents, and occasionally family members of the residents. Must have an interest in geriatrics.

Primary duties and responsibilities:

Participate in and lead a variety of games and projects for hospital residents, under the direction of the activity coordinator. Work one to one on individual resident activities. Work with adult volunteers and teen volunteers who help with patient activities. Spontaneously lead a group or individual discussions with residents.

Additional responsibilities may include:

Assist in set up and cleaning of the activity area. Keep equipment and supplies in good order. Transport patients (via wheelchair) to and from the activity area. Assist with field trips for extended care residents to local sites of interest. Promote a safe environment. Promote a positive, pleasant environment for optimal resident psychosocial growth.

Provides instruction on job search techniques, practice interviews, and assistance with career/interview clothing while creating a comfortable, non-judgemental environment for women to gain confidence as they learn and prepare to enter the workforce.

Specific Duties:

1. Cleans, sorts, organizes, and displays clothing in Career Closet, Upper First Avenue, and assists women in selecting appropriate career clothing. Also logs donations into the donation tracker.

2. Assists Empowerment Center participants in completing career workshops and creating job search plans.

3. Actively assists participants in employment search using the internet, local job listings, newspapers, and other available resources and connections. 

4. Maintains confidential client records associated with Economic Empowerment Services.

5. Provides information and referrals to community resources when appropriate to meet the needs of participants.

6. Staffs the Empowerment Center during regular hours of operation and by appointment, when requested. 

7. Assists in recruiting women to utilize upper First Avenue by actively promoting the Empowerment Services in the local community. 

8. Provides support, when needed, to the YWCA techGYRL program.

9. Assists with YWCA Special Events such as the YWCA Children's Fiesta, YWCA Week Without Violence, Peach Camps, Juneteenth, and possibly others.

This is a position that supports the planning and implementation of University of Illinois Extension's educational programs for youth. The position will be involved in planning and delivering programs for elementary and middle school youth in communities throughout Lee County.

Organizational Relationship:

This position is responsible to the University of Illinois Extension AmeriCorps Site Supervisor and the ABC AmeriCorps Program Director.

Responsibilities:

Work with University of Illinois Extension Youth Development Educator to design and plan the Sumer 4-H Outreach Program - this will include curriculum identification and selection, networking with community partners to identify local needs, and marketing and recruitment of participants for summer youth programs.  Implement and conduct the summer 4-H youth program in community settings in Lee county as directed by the supervisor. Design and implement a plan to transition summer youth participants into 4-H clubs and special interest groups following the summer program. Assist with set-up and take-down of educational props for programs as directed by Extension Educators. Assist with organizational materials. Distribute educational materials as directed by Extension Educators. Work with volunteers and collaborate with other organizations and agencies as needed.

Qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalent. Skill in dealing with people from varied ethnic/economic backgrounds. Communication skills (oral and written). Reliable automobile and valid driver's license. Interest/ability in teaching.

The AmeriCorps Volunteer will serve as the organization’s educational arm to continually inform, educate, and illuminate the community in the arts.  The volunteer will develop and support innovative arts collaborations among schools, community partners, and cultural institutions.  Speak out on behalf of arts education about the value and benefits of arts education.  Develop, publish, and/or disseminate resources for the arts in the community and at Festival 56, specifically preparing for the summer season educational components.  Implement educational programing, training and resources (i.e. a Saturday Theater / Dance Festival for High School Students).  During the off season the AmeriCorps Volunteer will inform appropriate parties (board members) of any needs requiring their attention regarding the Theatre.
