Virtual Volunteer: Help the Windy City ToolBank Build Community Impact

Calendar Until Nov 24, 2026
Time Flexible virtual schedule. Projects may be completed in smaller or longer work sessions based on volunteer availability and assigned work.

Description

Put your skills to work helping community organizations across Chicago accomplish more!

The Windy City ToolBank provides tools, equipment, and expertise to community-based organizations working throughout the Chicago area. Behind every tool that goes out our doors is a lot of work that can happen from anywhere.

We're looking for virtual volunteers to help with administrative, research, outreach, technology, communications, and special projects that strengthen the ToolBank and the organizations we serve.

What might I work on?

Projects vary based on current needs and can be matched to your skills, interests, and abilities. Opportunities may include:

  • Researching community organizations and potential ToolBank members
  • Updating spreadsheets, databases, and organizational information
  • Researching tools, equipment, products, or potential donations
  • Creating and organizing outreach lists
  • Researching potential community, nonprofit, government, or corporate partners
  • Helping with email and community outreach
  • Writing or editing ToolBank materials
  • Creating social media content, graphics, or other digital materials
  • Organizing photos and digital files
  • Researching grants, programs, events, or community resources
  • Preparing information for upcoming programs and volunteer projects
  • Data entry and other administrative projects
  • Helping document ToolBank projects and community impact
  • Technology and digital organization projects
  • Other special projects matched to your skills and interests

You do not need previous experience with tools or nonprofit organizations. We'll provide instructions and background information for assigned projects.

Flexible and Accessible Volunteering

This opportunity is designed to be completed remotely. Projects can be matched to different skills, abilities, schedules, and access needs.

Some projects may be completed independently and asynchronously, making this a good opportunity for volunteers who need flexibility or who cannot participate in traditional in-person volunteer activities.

There is no minimum weekly commitment. Volunteers interested in contributing regularly can work with us to identify recurring projects based on available work.

Need documented volunteer hours?

Windy City ToolBank welcomes volunteers completing community-service hours for SNAP work requirements, school, service programs, or other purposes.

Volunteer hours completed through this opportunity can be tracked and verified through Serve Illinois. Please let us know about any documentation or reporting requirements when you begin volunteering
