A Family Friend is a trustworthy and caring individual, willing to provide support to a Host Family or offer extended family-like relationships to a parent facing various challenges. They offer practical and emotional support, helping them envision and achieve their desired goals. The goal of a Family Friend is to journey with the parent until their situation has begun to stabilize, helping to start to establish solid parenting skills and a safe home environment for their children. Some Family Friends may provide daytime childcare at a host home or a parent’s home, or assist with transportation. Family Friending can extend beyond that to include weekend hostings and respite opportunities. We strongly encourage all families to contemplate becoming Host Families, enabling them to serve in these respite opportunities.

All volunteers must first go though an orientation before they can attend any regular volunteer shifts. Please be sure to register for an orientation prior to your first volunteer shift. Thank you for supporting our mission! We hope to see you soon!

Youth Resource Guide Scout: A YRS volunteer will ensure that Alternatives youth and families have access to the most current information. Responsibilities include auditing and updating our community resource directory, which includes verifying the hours of local food pantries, identifying new after-school programs, and testing each of the phone numbers listed. This volunteer will help bridge the information gap for Chicago’s youth, providing a reliable foundation that our staff uses every day to make accurate referrals.

Space Research and Vetting Volunteer will identify spaces that align with both mission and budget of Alternatives. This remote-friendly, skills-based opportunity involves scouting a diverse range of locations, from industrial lofts in the West Loop to community centers on the South Side, and evaluating them based on key criteria such as accessibility (ADA compliance), catering flexibility, and AV capabilities. By maintaining a database of vetted vendors and negotiating nonprofit rates, you will directly enable the organization to maximize its donor impact and create professional, inclusive environments for its supporters

Alternatives' Research Volunteer will research a particular geographic area where Alternatives services are provided for general demographics information, partner organizations, and general community areas to find out strengths/gaps of each particular geographic area.

The Digital Archive & Transcription Aide helps our organization preserve its history and improve accessibility by organizing our "digital library." Categorized tasks such as adding descriptive tags to our photo archives, sorting digital flyers by year, and proofreading auto-generated captions for our youth-led video content. This role is essential for ensuring Alternatives’ materials are searchable for future grants and accessible to individuals with hearing impairments. 

Digital Engagement Volunteer: The Digital Engagement volunteers play a vital role in boosting our nonprofit’s online presence and strengthening our ties with the Chicago community. Volunteers will act as a digital ambassador by monitoring relevant social media hashtags, "liking" posts from our community partners, and leaving supportive comments on local youth-focused events. By maintaining this consistent, positive digital pulse, volunteers will increase the reach of Alternatives’ mission and ensure that our partner organizations feel seen and supported.

This is a non-medical role focused entirely on providing comfort, presence, and connection. APEX Hospice is seeking compassionate volunteers to serve as phone support callers.

We are looking for individuals who are strong listeners and want to make a meaningful impact by supporting hospice patients and their families.

Volunteers in this role will provide:

-Bereavement check-in calls to families after the loss of a loved one

-Support calls to patients and families to assess satisfaction with care and ensure their needs are being met

These roles are non-medical but play a vital part in the hospice care team.

Volunteers offer emotional support, a caring presence, and an opportunity for patients and families to share their experiences.

Volunteer Zoom Exercise Host (Remote)

The Working On Wellness Foundation provides FREE online seated exercise sessions for people who cannot participate in traditional standing or floor exercises. Our programs support individuals living with conditions such as Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, arthritis, mobility challenges, and aging-related limitations.

We’re seeking friendly, empathetic volunteers to host live Zoom exercise sessions on weekday mornings. Each session begins with 15 minutes of social chat, followed by a pre-recorded seated exercise class led by certified instructors. We currently need a host Thursday mornings from 11 AM Eastern (10 Central, 9 Mountain, 8 Pacific) for one hour. But we are also open to training more volunteers who would be willing to substitute as needed.

Step back in time and help bring history to life as a Historic Sites Tour Guide at Homestead Prairie Farm in the Rock Springs Conservation Area (3939 Nearing Lane, Decatur). Volunteers share the sights, sounds, and daily rhythms of 1860s rural Illinois through guided tours, educational programs, open houses, and special events at this rare pre–Civil War homestead. Training, shadowing, and period clothing are provided, and interpretation is done in the third person, making it easy to get started. With a commitment of just an hour or two per month, this rewarding role offers a true “wow” moment—especially for younger visitors discovering life before electricity, phones, and modern technology. Get your hands in the soil and help grow the habitats of tomorrow! We’re building a list of volunteers for pop-up planting workdays, which will be scheduled as the growing season begins and plants arrive. Recruitment and onboarding for the current 2025-2026 year has ended but we are already looking for amazing volunteers for the next program year! Tutoring Chicago is a free one-to-one tutoring program for students in grades 1-12.

We are looking for volunteers for our 2026-2027 school year. Tutoring Chicago offers both in-person and digital tutoring options to our tutors/students from late September to late May.

Volunteers work one-to-one with a 1st-12th grade student on a weekly basis during the school year. Tutors and mentors will focus on academic support, mentorship activities, social-emotional learning, and the importance of accountability. Volunteers share which program, grade level, evening, method and location they prefer.

No prior experience or special skills are necessary. Orientation and training are provided to all volunteers. One matched, volunteers have access to our library of tools, materials and resources to effective support their student. In-person and digital sessions are held on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday evenings from 6-7:30PM (CST). Life Changing role models needed. Make a difference in a student's life today!

Methods: In-person or digitally. In-person in Lincoln Park, Logan-Square, Pilsen, Chatham and Evanston.

For those interested in becoming a virtual tutor and mentor, the online zoom sessions are held at 6pm Chicago time.

No special skills, no experience or background in education is necessary. Above all the willingness to be there and the desire to impact, inspire and empower a student. Being present is all it takes. One and a half hours per week is enough to change a kid's life.

The old grade school in Nauvoo is owned by the city and serves as a place for people to walk during the winter and houses several small businesses. This civic center needs regular cleaning from sweeping and mopping the hallways and gymnasium, to cleaning the bathrooms. 

Help staff  one of the buildings of the Addison Historical Museum during Village of Addison Special Events throughout the year.  These events include, but are not limited to, Memorial Day Open House, Rock 'N Wheels Thursday Nights from June-August, Oktoberfest in October,  Veterans Day Open House and the Christmas Tree Lighting and Holiday Events in December.

Una interacción social es importante para el espíritu humano; creemos que nutrir el alma es tan importante como alimentar al cuerpo. Los adultos mayores con los que trabajamos tienen poco o nulo contacto con familiares y/o amistades. Ellos viven aislados. Los voluntarios apoyan a los adultos mayores a través de la amistad, participando en diversas actividades y programas, e incluso visitas personales y fiestas en días festivos.

Assist clients through the food pantry at FOCC

At the UIC HAPPY Lab, we are conducting research studying how ovarian hormones influence drug effects and behavior. If you are a woman (sex assigned at birth) aged 18-35 years old, use birth control pill that is 21 days active, 7 days inactive, or do not use birth control, and currently consume or previously consumed substances on a recreational basis (for example, alcohol, caffeine, cannabis, stimulants etc), you may be eligible to participate.

The research involves a screening interview and 8 study visits (total time commitment of up to 26h) and you will be compensated for your time. The Bridge Teen Center is looking for volunteers to support its afterschool programs (Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday afternoons from 2 pm - 6 pm) and Friday night events (7 pm - 11 pm). Establishing and deepening relationships with students is the primary focus.

Volunteers can help out in many different ways depending on your experience and comfortability. This volunteer opportunity is for individuals aged 21 and over.

Do you love the elderly? Have a valid driver's license, car insurance, and access to a vehicle?

Use your car to make a crucial impact with your volunteer service. Volunteer drivers pick up seniors and drive them to and from doctor appointments. This opportunity is very flexible; only accept assignments that work for your schedule and location. Our transportation drivers are not asked to handle wheelchairs as we understand special transportation is needed for that.

Transportation is an enormous issue for many seniors. Many seniors cannot pick up their prescriptions, get their groceries, or get to important medical appointments because they no longer drive and may not have anyone who can drive them to their destination. Please accept the call to provide tangible help as a driver.

Mileage reimbursement is available.

Those 21 and older may volunteer however, if you are 55 or older, join the AmeriCorps Seniors RSVP (Retired Senior Volunteer Program) to make your service count on a national scale and to help Senior Services Associates.

Be a Friend! - Volunteer for the Friendly Visiting Program (FVP)

Are you 18 or older, friendly, dependable, compassionate, and committed to making a positive difference?

Yes? Then be a friend to local seniors living in the Southern Kane or Kendall area. Our friendly visiting program helps to reduce senior isolation and could be the perfect volunteer opportunity for you. Volunteers provide one-to-one social interaction with seniors facing social isolation.

Volunteering for FVP makes a real difference for seniors. Every encounter a volunteer has with local seniors brightens the senior’s day through socialization provided with visits, phone calls, and even letters can bring happiness to someone experiencing depression or loneliness.

To be eligible to volunteer in the Friendly Visiting Program, volunteers must:

An ideal volunteer would be caring, compassionate, and a good listener. Volunteers are asked to give at least one hour of service each week and can commit to one year of service. 

Those aged 18-54 years may become a Friendly Visitor but are not eligible for the AmeriCorps RSVP program.

Those who speak an additional language are also welcome and needed.

Bring some of your own knowledge and skillsets to this fantastic opportunity by teaching a class or holding a group that has to due with a specific skillset you have (ex: arborist, painter, instrumentalist, etc...) The opportunities at this placement are endless as you can help an individual by mentoring them, role playing job interviews, helping them to write a resume, being part of the buddy system on local day trips, being a chaperone at a dance, and so much more!
