The Greater Chicago Food Depository regularly needs volunteers to help repacking donated food and other products. Much of the food we receive at our warehouse comes in bulk quantities, and volunteers are scheduled to help us break it down into more manageable sizes. In a Repack session you may sort produce, inspect and box shipments of bread, or repack bulk dry goods (pasta, rice, beans) into smaller quantities. Together, we can properly and efficiently distribute quality food to participating food pantries, soup kitchens, and shelters in Cook County.

Family Matters - Chicago: Last fall we tore down a garage to make a green space for the youth at Family Matters. We need help spreading top soil, planting grass, and spreading mulch. We also are looking for help putting in a fence after the soil is spread. Email for more information.

In the COVID-19 event, Illinois is looking for medically trained individuals to join the fight. Individuals that register here may be potentially contacted to work in a hospital surge or alternative housing setting.

We are looking for 2-3 people who are willing to complete grant applications. The grants will be found by other persons. The company name or government agency will be provided along with the application start and due date. We will also provide substantial general and financial information that the person needs to complete the application. This person will have phone, text and email access to other people who can provide additional information the grant writer feels they need. This type of work can be done from anywhere a computer can be used.  

We realize that finding grants and completing the applications are two time consuming processes. Thus, we would like to have multiple people doing both of these tasks. Our vision is to have 2 volunteers working in conjunction with each other:

1. One person would research the availability and timing of government available grant for projects similar to those of Operation Empower..

2. A second person would research the availability and timing of corporation grants that support projects similar to those of Operation Empower.

Volunteers will help elementary students after school at Flickinger Learning Center with homework, assigned activities, or reading. May also assist staff with light clerical duties to help prepare activities for curriculum. Volunteers will not be responsible for supervising children. Must pass a background check and have basic math, spelling, and reading skills. 

United Way of Muscatine has a food rescue program that runs Monday-Friday, rain or shine. Volunteers will go to the grocery or restaurant location they are assigned and pick up unwanted and excess food. The food needs to be taken to one of the local food pantries for distribution. Help reduce waste and feed the hungry!

Senior Resources has four routes that go out Monday - Friday and two routes that go out on Saturday. Each route takes around an hour to deliver. Volunteers will pick up meals and route information at Trinity Hospital around 10:45 am. Volunteers can deliver once, twice, or four times a week! 

The Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) sponsored by UnityPoint Health-Finley Hospital is seeking dedicated volunteers to join as counselors.  SHIIP counselors help with questions regarding Medicare, Medicare supplements, Medicare claims processing, Medicare Advantage, Medicare prescription drug plans and long term care insurance. This is a critical service for senior citizens in our community and solely volunteer run.  Training is provided by knowledgeable staff in Des Moines and all training expenses are covered.  Volunteers are encouraged to join now to become trained for Open Enrollment (October-December).  Each year during Open Enrollment the SHIIP office at Finley Hospital is full of appointments and clients are referred to the helpline, with additional counselors we can make sure our community is meeting the needs of all those seeking assistance with Medicare.

We are looking for volunteers to greet guests when the historic house is open for tours May to October. You would also take admission, ring up gift shop purchases, and count visitors. This easy volunteer activity for 1-2 afternoons a month in a pleasant historic house gives you an opportunity to work with people and there's some downtime if you want to bring a book, knitting, etc.

Court Appointed Special Advocates are trained and qualified community advocates to serve as an effective voice in court for abused and neglected children, strengthening efforts to ensure that each child is living in a safe, permanent and nurturing home.  CASA are required to see the child every 30 days.

A vision screening is done to identify possible vision problems. Partner with eye care professionals to carry out joint screening events and ensure further assessment when needed.

Volunteers are needed to deliver meals to home-bound seniors Monday through Friday between 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Make an older adults day by delivering them a hot, nutritious meal!
